Report: Andre Schurrle "set to join" before the window shuts

We'll be seeing these kinds of stories floating around the web for most of the next twenty four hours, but the Telegraph are reporting that Andre Schurrle is looking likely to join Chelsea before the window shuts tomorrow evening. Before I start examining the gaping holes in this story, let's look at what the Telegraph had to say:

Bayer Leverkusen striker Andre Schurrle looks set to join before the transfer window closes at 11pm on Friday in a deal approaching £20 million, a move that might even see Daniel Sturridge allowed to move out on loan. Yossi Benayoun and Florent Malouda are, though, likelier to move on.

So where's the evidence suggesting that Schurrle will be on the move exactly? That's a problem, as there doesn't appear to be any. To the contrary, Bayer have actually already sold one striker today, so the evidence would suggest that they are highly unlikely to move their best attacker in this window.

There's also the matter of the player's fit at Chelsea. Sure, he could fill in at center forward behind Fernando Torres and Daniel Sturridge. He's not ideally suited to that role though, so you'd assume that he'd be used primarily in a supporting role. We've already added a ton of options in that capacity this window, so adding Schurrle with a wing role in mind would seem a bit redundant. Yes, he's a fantastic talent, but he's not really a need anymore.

There's also the matter of a Daniel Sturridge loan, which is mentioned in the Telegraph article. There are basically two options which I see with Danny...keep him or sell him outright. With the player's contract expiring next summer, it makes no sense at all to send him out on loan.

When all is said and done, this seems like another silly speculation based rumor to just toss into the garbage bin. Tomorrow may prove me wrong, and I'd certainly love to see Schurrle in blue, but it just doesn't make any sense now that we've signed Victor Moses. Oh well, I guess deadline day just wouldn't be the same without Chelsea links to discuss.
