Want Edinson Cavani? Well now he has a release clause

Chelsea fans have been talking up Edinson Cavani for some time now, possibly because he is really super-duper awesome. We've seen the Uruguay centre forward first hand when he helped Napoli demolish us at the Stadio San Paulo earlier this year, a match that I now remember far more fondly than I was ever expecting to at the time. With Fernando Torres having what I'll charitably call a difficult year, Cavani was on the radar as one of the marquee striking options for the Blues. And now he has a release clause:

That's the new deal that Cavani's agent was going for when he talked up the 25-year-old's links to Chelsea, so congrats to him for a successful negotiation. As far as Chelsea -- or anyone else -- are concerned, however, they can now secure Cavani's services for a cool €55 million (£44 million) plus whatever he'll end up demanding in wages. That's a lot of money, and with Torres seemingly coming good this season I can't imagine any Blues fans would be pushing particularly hard for the club to spend it, but he's now a legitimate, if hugely expensive option if and when we have a striker meltdown.
