Fernando Torres Wins The Euro 2012 Golden Boot

New, comments

Three goals, one assist (to Juan Mata!) and fewer minutes played than Mario Gomez means that Fernando Torres has, incredibly, won the golden boot at Euro 2012. He came into the final against Italy needed both a goal and an assist to get it, and considering that he came on as a late second half substitute he didn't look particularly likely to grab them.

But then he scored the goal he needed:

That got him even on goals, but he needed an assist (or another goal) to get himself in position to win the golden boot. So he did this:

He nearly got another assist very late when he crossed for Sergio Ramos, but five goals for Spain would probably have been greedy. Anyway, congratulations to Torres - let's hope that this is the confidence builder he needs to get back to his best with Chelsea. And congratulations to Spain, who finally decided to start playing exciting football for a change. Fernando Torres and Juan Mata are European Champions twice over.
