Well this is fun. Apparently John Terry still isn't completely recovered from the hamstring injury he sustained during England's friendly against Belgium and that means that he's now a major injury risk if he plays in England's first Euro 2012 game on Monday. The Mirror is reporting that Terry is also carrying a groin injury, and that Roy Hodgson is worried that he might aggravate either problem if he features in England's starting lineup against France.

Unfortunately for Terry he'll probably end up playing, because England don't really have many other options at centre back. Pretty much everyone is injured at this point - Chelsea teammate Gary Cahill's been sent home with a fractured jaw and several other top centre backs are out of action for various reasons. Unlike the injuries to Cahill and Frank Lampard, which are unlikely to last for long enough to jeopardise their playing time for Chelsea, I'm pretty worried about this. Playing through an injury is a great way to pick up something far more serious and even though we've got good centre back depth at present losing Terry for any length of time would be pretty worrisome.

In other words, England should just bite the bullet and start Joleon Lescott alongside Phil Jagielka against France. They're not a good team and they're unlikely to make a major mark at the tournament, so there's no reason whatsoever to risk a player's health in participating.
