We know that Chelsea will be heading to the USA for a tour this summer, and we also know that they'll be finishing their pre-season with a Community Shield date against defending Premier League champions Manchester City. With the Olympic games still dominating London at the scheduled time of the game it was always unlikely that this year's event would be held at Wembley as it traditionally is. We now know where that game will be taking place. Villa Park is set to host this season's Community Shield as Wembley will be hosting the Olympic final the day prior.
This will at least get the game out of the chaos that will be consuming London at the time, but I'm a bit surprised that the FA didn't try to find a larger venue for the contest. While the 42,000 seating capacity of Villa Park isn't tiny, there were certainly larger stadiums available which weren't being used by the games at that point in the competition or at all. Hopefully this doesn't have to great an impact on the matchday revenues Chelsea receive from participating, although that's really a drop in the bucket at this point. Villa Park it is then...
