Tomas Kalas has been excellent this season at Vitesse, and according to Kalas it appears likely that he'll be extending his stay in the Eredivisie another season. Kalas recently did an interview with Goal.com (I know...), in which he was quoted with the following:
It's important for a young player to get plenty of playing time. At clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester United and Bayern Munich, you don't get much first-team action at my age, but my time will come. I'm convinced of that. I'm only 18 and still have plenty to learn at Vitesse. >It's 99.9 per cent sure that I will stay here. The parties involved have yet to reach an agreement, but I expect to stay at Vitesse. I know that a new coach will arrive at Chelsea, but I'm very happy here. Returning to Chelsea wouldn't make much sense at this point. Other teams from England have also approached me, but the offers I received weren't good enough. I don't think someone should make that step until you're ready for it. I'm not at that point yet.My biggest dream is to return to Chelsea at one point, and to take over John Terry's role at the club. I still have a long way to go, though. I don't want to be exactly like Terry, but it would be great if I could become a first team regular at Chelsea, and even wear the captain armband.
Wow. When you read stuff like this, it's easy to forget that the kid is just 18. Then again, watching him play usually makes you forget that he's only 18. It's certainly nice to see that some of these talented youngsters see the need for loan spells to help their development, and Kalas really seems as grounded as they come.
Having watched Vitesse for most of the season, I'd have to agree with his assessment that he's not ready to be playing regularly in England yet. While he's certainly got promise, he really does need to fill out some and get more experience before facing the type of talent he'd see week in and week out in the Premier League. That said, Vitesse will look a lot better for him if Vitesse can manage to clinch a spot in Europa for next season. We'll have more on Kalas after his loan deal ends, hopefully Vitesse win on Sunday and make me wait to write that one.
