Chelsea Issue Statement On Pre-Match Problems At Wembley

Chelsea's FA Cup semifinal against Tottenham Hotspur was controversial in many ways, and one of those was the interruption of the moment of silence for the victims of the Hillsborough disaster and Piermario Morosini by the fans at Wembley. With Hillsborough-related derogatory chants appearing to come from the Chelsea end, it didn't exactly make the club look good. I was hoping that the Blues would issue a statement condemning the actions of those few who chose to disrespect the anniversary, and to their credit, they have:

Chelsea Football Club is extremely disappointed that a very small minority of fans embarrassed the club today by not honouring the moment's silence before kick-off.

Chelsea FC believes all moments of respect should be honoured and today we pay our full respects to all those that suffered as a result of the Hillsborough disaster 23 years ago.

I was embarrassed by the actions of that small minority of fans, and I'm glad the club feels the same way. Comments are closed.
