Backroom Staff Shakeup Includes Chelsea Old Boy Return

New, comments

It's not just Andre Villas-Boas who's bitten the dust at Chelsea. When the manager was sacked on Sunday, two members of the backroom staff went with him - head opposition scout Daniel Sousa departs, as does fitness coach Jose Mario Rocha. Don't worry about Dr. Eva, though. She's staying right where she is. I know y'all were worried.

Anyway, these moves have opened up some holes in the organisation, and interim manager Roberto di Matteo has moved to fill them by appointing Chris Jones as fitness coach as well as bringing in Chelsea old boy Eddie Newton*, which means that our managing team would totally own Middlesbrough.

*He worked with di Matteo at MK Dons and West Bromwich Albion.

Newton was always one of my favourites because of his goal in the 1997 FA Cup final, which I must have seen on video fifty or sixty times as a child. That video tape was essentially the only Chelsea artifact I owned as a kid who somehow ended up getting stuck in the USA at ten years old, and I watched it all the time. Di Matteo's goal was brilliant and everything, but Newton wrapped things up with a Lampard-esque finish late on:

Good memories. Welcome back to the Bridge, Eddie!
