Report: Chelsea FC extend a pair of youngsters

Yesterday was a slow deadline day by the standards we've been used to recently, but apparently Chelsea made progress on several fronts anyway. According to Sky Sports, Chelsea have agreed to extend both Sam Walker and Aziz Deen-Conteh until the end of the 2013/2014 season.

For those of you unfamiliar, Deen-Conteh is a talented young left back that's currently in our reserve squad. He's represented the England youth setup on every appropriate level thus far an is probably about on the same level as Ben Gordon on Chelsea's current depth chart. While he's definitely not likely to factor into the first team at any point soon, I'd guess this is a precursor to a loan spell next year in which we will get to evaluate him further. I suppose it's even possible that he'll be sent to a lower level side in England this year when the emergency loan window opens, but he's still probably just fine with the reserves.

Sam Walker has been showing up in the loan reports on a weekly basis. He's currently the starter at Yeovil, and with his contract having been due to expire in June I thought he was likely auditioning for a new job. I guess this is a sign that the Chelsea staff likes what they see in Sam, as we have a glut of young talent in goal now locked up for the foreseeable future. It will be interesting to see if this has any effect on Matej Delac's future with the club. Anyway, congratulations to both and best of luck over the next two and a half seasons. We'll be watching...
