At this point, a new striker seems to be the item atop just about every Chelsea fan's wishlist for January. While many would debate exactly who the striker we should be targeting is, not many are very comfortable with what we currently have.
Enter Wilfried Bony. The 23-year old Ivorian has been fantastic for Vitesse Arnhem over the past few seasons, and he's been linked to any number of Premier League teams because of it. Chelsea have been mentioned in conjunction with Bony in the past, and today his agent confirmed that the European champions are, in fact, interested in his client. Via Sky Sports:
"There is interest in the player from the Premier League, Chelsea, Aston Villa included."
Sky Sports didn't just have a quote from the agent though, they managed to find a quote from Bony himself as well:
"My agent is dealing with all enquiries but being linked with Chelsea is a dream come true, they are a very big club, and my hero Drogba was there!"
Chelsea clearly have a very good working relationship with Vitesse, as we have had seven different players on loan there over the past three seasons, with no fewer than three different loanees at the club in any single season. If we really are targeting Bony, I can't imagine it will be a painful negotiation.
Personally, I'd be thrilled if Bony was indeed the target. He's an excellent young player that would give us some resale value later on, and he probably won't cost a whole lot right now. I watch a lot of Vitesse games though (probably more than any club other than Chelsea actually), so I'm likely a bit biased when it comes to Bony. This will certainly be a story to watch as the January window approaches, and I've got my fingers crossed on this one.
