Juventus vs. Chelsea, UEFA Champions League: Final score 3-0; Initial reaction & community ratings form

Grab your Petr Cech crash helmet, because this is going to get rather ugly.

Claudio Villa

The talking heads may want to go ahead and prepare Chelsea's Champions League obituary for the 2012-13 season. An underwhelming opening 45 minutes gave way to an even more frustrating second half in Turin on Tuesday night, resulting in a thoroughly deserved 3-0 defeat to Juventus.

Such a result sees Chelsea's presence in the competition they won a season ago on life support. Simply put, progression is out of the club's hands now. Only a Shakhtar Donetsk win over Juventus, coupled with a Chelsea victory against Nordsjælland, on Matchday 6 will ensure advancement out of the group stages. Anything less and Chelsea becomes the first reigning champions to exit at this stage in 6,346 years.

Wonderful.

Now, for a choice few thoughts. There won't be many, as I'm pretty much ready to sock somebody in the ovary.

  • Simple put, the False 9 experiment did not work. Aside from some good counter play - which in itself was rare - we didn't threaten Gianluigi Buffon much at all. It seemed that, at times, our creative trident was hesitant to work the ball into the box without a focal point.
  • I can't believe that, in light of our glaring hole up front, that we need to splash even more cash following the summer outlay.
  • How do you think Fernando Torres felt watching all of this unfold before being introduced? If only there was some way to cut ties and let the man move on with his life.
  • César Azpilicueta is pulled in the 60th minute for Victor Moses. A minute later, the man he was marking, Kwadwo Asamoah, frolicked down the left side and set up Arturo Vidal for Juventus' second goal. Coincidence?
  • Roberto Di Matteo is Miles Davis cool. Regardless he has to be feeling some heat now.
  • So, Thursday nights? Not even the slightest bit funny.
