Steward hospitalised following Chelsea vs. Manchester United

Shaun Botterill

There was more fallout to the match between Chelsea and Manchester United at Stamford Bridge than the Mark Clattenburg fiasco and three dropped points. During the craziness that followed Javier 'Chicharito' Hernandez's goal, a steward managed to get himself badly hurt and spent much of the rest of the game being treated by a large group of medics before being taken to hospital.

That's obviously deeply distressing and pretty dubious, and at the moment it remains unclear just how it happened. A Chelsea spokesman claimed at the match that the club was looking into it but had no answers at present:

We are investigating all the incidents around that time. We are looking at reports of objects that may have been thrown or incidents around the steward taking a fall. My information so far is that he slipped and fell, may have hurt his knee, and was being treated by the side of the pitch.

If this was from something the crowd did -- and we still don't really know what happened -- that's a pretty unfortunate response, no matter how much certain parties named Rio Ferdinand may or may not have incited the home faithful to throw things or charge the field.

All in all, it's been a pretty depressing day.
