Read the title, and then read it again. John Obi Mikel scored for the Nigerian national team on his return to the Eagles in their 6-1 rout of Liberia. That isn't a typo, Mikel actually scored. Both Chelsea players started the game, and both were very impressive for their country.
Nigeria had a 2-0 lead at the half, and Victor Moses made 3-0 just two minutes into the second half. Mikel would score from the penalty spot to make it 4-0, and the pair would combine on the sixth goal of the game when Moses got on the end of a Mikel cross to make it 6-1.
The 2013 tournament will have 16 teams qualify, and eight of those teams are now in the group stage. Those eight teams include Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, Ghana, South Africa, Mali, Zambia, Tunisia and Morocco. The other eight teams will be determined in qualifying on Sunday.
After the strong performances, it seems fairly likely that both Mikel and Moses will be in the Nigerian squad that will be competing in the tournament this winter. The ACoN begins January 19, 2013, with the final scheduled to be played February 10, 2013.
