The defender became an instant first-choice started for Carlo Ancelotti, and has since entertained and frustrated in equal measure, becoming a cult hero for key goals against Manchester United and Manchester City (not to mention his rather excellent hair), but drawing criticism for his erratic style of play and his habit of switching off at key moments.
