Chelsea FC Transfer Rumours: No Approach For Cesar Azpilicueta

Those of you pining for a new Chelsea right back this window and specifically picking out Marseille's Cesar Azpilicueta as your man may not be too happy about this. Despite the Blues being thoroughly linked to the defender, he's claiming that no contact has yet been made:

There has been no contact, and I am still bound to OM until 2014. Now, if the leaders of Chelsea want me, they should first discuss that with OM. If a proposal comes, I will think about it.

It is more difficult to start in the national team when you do not play at a great club. You have to be at Real Madrid or Barcelona. But I feel good today at OM.

Now, obviously it's good news that he'd apparently welcome an approach from the Blues, but you'd have expected the team to be in touch (even if unofficially) with Marseille had they any intention of going after Azpilicueta this window, and for that to then filter down to the player. Personally, I'm not hugely concerned about this - he's a nice player but I'm not sure he's a star, and with Branislav Ivanovic and Jose Bosingwa our right-back corps is adequate, if a little bit odd.

I'm also all aboard the Tommy-Kalas-as-our-future-right-back train (he's so fast that I think he's wasted as a centre half), so I'm less inclined to spend money on blocking him off for a minor upgrade for the next couple of seasons (especially as Azpilicueta's cup-tied in Europe this year). If Chelsea could focus their energies anywhere, I'd hope it'd be on the left wing.
