Remember how we have roughly infinity young left backs on our team? Between Ryan Bertrand, Ben Gordon and Patrick van Aanholt we have too many interesting young players behind Ashley Cole and not really enough playing time for any of them. That sort of problem is what loan deals are for though, and we've just had our first, with Gordon officially heading to the Championship for six months to play with Peterborough.
It's only a six-month loan, so it's hardly a long-term thing, but it's still good to see Gordon (who's just gotten back from the under-20 World Cup) get the prospect of some playing time in a relatively strong league. I'd guess that there's still another loan move on the cards for one of Bertrand and van Aanholt, however, and there's reportedly been some interest in the former from the likes of Queens Park Rangers.
Anyway, there are some things Gordon definitely needs to work on, especially holding his line a little better. In the u20 World Cup, he showed an alarming tendency towards left-sided Bosingwaism, and playing against Championship level teams will either beat that little habit out of him or see him leaving for good. He's only got a couple of years left on his deal with Chelsea, so this is going to be make-or-break for the 20-year-old. Let's hope he does well in Peterborough.
