Ed: Corrected David Luiz's shirt number. It was previously reported as #6, but will instead be #4.
IN - Fernando Torres, David Luiz
The transfer window closed half an hour ago, and we have quite the haul. Spanish striker Fernando Torres is Chelsea's new number nine, and although they had to break the British transfer record to do it, the combination of Torres and Didier Drogba is going to strike fear into the heart of every defence on the planet. Torres has apparently signed a five and a half year deal on wages of 175,000 a week, and it took a 50M transfer fee to get Liverpool to part ways with their former talisman.
Some quotes from our newest forward, via an interview on Chelsea TV:
"They're the kind of team I liked to play against - that motivates me... One of the biggest teams in Europe, always fighting for everything. I wanted to play in one of the top level clubs in the world... big step forward in my career... Didier is by far the best striker in the world"
One defender who won't have to worry about how to deal with Torres is Brazil international David Luiz, who assumes Ricardo Carvalho's mantle, but not his shirt number - he'll be wearing #4. Chelsea's newest defender comes to us from Benfica, who took us on a bit of a wild ride before finally agreeing to a deal that cost the Blues roughly 21.5M and young midfielder Nemanja Matic. Luiz, 23, is also signed to a five and a half year deal, and should be a stalwart in the Blues defence for years to come.
OUT - Nemanja Matic, Gael Kakuta, Jeffrey Bruma, Patrick van Aanholt, Daniel Sturridge, Jacob Mellis
Only Matic is a permanent transfer, and the midfielder is on his way to Benfica at the end of the season as a makeweight in the David Luiz deal. The rest of our departures are loanees - Kakuta and Sturridge go to Premier League sides in Fulham and Bolton respectively, while both Bruma and van Aanholt will get vital first team experience at Leicester in the Championship. Rounding everything out, Jacob Mellis heads to Barnsley. All of these loans should only be until the end of the season.
