Yeah, it's another update on the David Luiz transfer, thanks to some quotes from the Portuguese media, who are, like their English compatriots, reporting that a deal is very close, Benfica and Chelsea having agreed over the big picture terms, etc. Those aren't the interesting parts, though - what is perhaps more intriguing is this gem:
Nemanja Matic, a 22-year-old Serbian international central defender [note: he's actually a defensive midfielder], is believed to be the player most likely to head to Portugal as part of the deal. Matic, who joined Chelsea in 2009, has been on loan with Dutch outfit Vitesse, where he has been a regular in the team’s battle to stay in the Eredivisie.
Matic is a good player, and I'd hate to see him go, but he'd be behind about seven other players in Chelsea's depth chart, and it's not like he's significantly younger than Luiz either. If Benfica want him to make up the deal, even on a permanent basis, this isn't a huge deal. Either way, we'll know very soon, as the transfer looks like it's going to be coming to a close today.
