Unsurprisingly, Jose Mourinho's pre-match press conference featured several questions about recent transfer rumors. The first featured Edinson Cavani, as reports yesterday suggested that his representatives were in London trying to find interest ahead of a Premier League move. The rumor seemed foolish to begin with, and Mourinho didn't give it the time of day:
Mourinho on signing Cavani: 'I have no idea. He just arrived at the club (PSG) six months ago'— Sam Wallace (@SamWallaceIndy) February 7, 2014
The final question of the press conference was about Ashley Cole. Thierry Henry has suggested recently that Ashley Cole should consider joining the MLS side playing in New Jersey, and Jose responded by laughing it off. He started out making a joke about Henry joining Beckham in an MLS owner's box, before he finally affirmed that Cole would be welcomed back at Chelsea:
Mourinho on Thierry Henry saying Ashley Cole should join NYRB: 'Yes, he (Cole) has a future (at CFC). Maybe Thierry has a better proposal'— Sam Wallace (@SamWallaceIndy) February 7, 2014
Personally, I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Cole depart the club, but Mourinho isn't going to confirm anything at this point in the season. I kind of wish he had just left it alone after making fun of the question, though he never treated all that seriously anyway.
Regardless, it will be a few months before any of this is overly relevant. Newcastle and a possible spot at the top of the table await tomorrow, and for now, it's good that the focus is on that.
