Rumored Chelsea target Heung-min Son rejects HSV contract offer, according to reports

Chelsea are reportedly interested in acquiring the South Korean, who is out of contract at the end of the 2013/2014 season

Last week we heard that Chelsea have expressed an interest in adding HSV's Heung-min Son to add depth and versatility to their attack. Son has less than a season and a half left to run on his deal with the Bundesliga club, and while their is interest on both sides in extending the player, a deal had not yet been agreed.

Today, reports in Germany are claiming that the player has rejected a substantial offer from the club. If the German paper is correct, the 20-year old turned down an offer that would have paid him €2.8m per year until 2017, which is in the neighborhood of ₤47k per week. That would make him the second highest earner at the club, just behind Rafael van der Vaart.

The reluctance to accept such a substantial offer would lead me to believe that the player's agent knows there could be better offers elsewhere, likely confirming legitimate interest from some of the bigger sides in England and Italy. HSV also make good money from several South Korean sponsors, something that is believed to be largely dependent on retaining the player.

HSV may well be able to come up with enough money to tempt the player to stay, as the fourth Bundesliga Champions League place is wide open at the moment and Hamburg are very much in the mix. If HSV falter down the stretch and an extension can't be agreed though, he'll be one of the more interesting names to follow this summer.
