While Chelsea are withing touching distance of the top of the Premier League table, it's hard to watch the squad every week and come away feeling that it's a well balanced unit. The defense has been posting respectable numbers all season, while the creative talent behind the strikers are mostly brilliant on a fairly regular basis.
The club haven't been getting much production from their strikers, but something else seems to be missing. The midfield trio of Frank Lampard, John Obi Mikel, and Ramires just seem to struggle to have the sort of impact that they should, and experimenting with different shapes hasn't done much to cover up the problem.
With Nemanja Matic flourishing in Portugal, many fans are left wondering what could have been. The Daily Mail is reporting the following though, which should be welcome news ahead of the January transfer window:
Chelsea's hopes of re-signing Nemanja Matic could improve after this weekend when his agent is due in London for talks.
This would be big news for Chelsea fans, as Matic would likely step in as the Blues best central midfielder the second he returned to the club. He'd also be a tremendous compliment to Ramires, offering quality cover when the Brazilian runs off into the sunset.
The Mail aren't always very reliable though, so this report should certainly be taken with a huge grain of salt. That said, if there's any truth to it at all, it would seem to indicate we're finally looking to do something about our midfield. After several years worth of issues in that department, that would be some very welcome news.
