The importance of the League Cup!

I have seen several comments on WAGNH that suggest the League Cup should be forgotten about, send out the reserves, it's a tin pot trophy. Normally I would understand that sentiment, purely based on the lack of kudos and cash associated with the COC. But something tells me this year is different, for the following reasons

  • Every trophy counts. With so many English teams capable of winning 3 of the 4 trophies on offer, the League Cup is important.
  • This might be controversial, but I see little difference now between the League Cup and the FA Cup, and FA Cup fixtures come at such a vital time when we will be fighting for the title, and battling for the 'always important' Champions League, focusing on it could become a real distraction. There is a reason why no one has won a quadruple yet. We are in the semis of the COC already. Focus on it and play our 'still very capable' second string in the FAC!
  • Mou hasn't won a trophy in a while (by his lofty standards). Lifting a trophy at Wembley soon is crucial for his second spell at CFC. No trophies this season as well, and you can imagine the press! A massive part of stability in an elite club is winning whatever trophies are out there. One a season is almost mandatory, and none for 2 seasons is bad news whatever way you look at it. We can't say 'this is a developing squad' for too long.
  • Winning in big finals breeds a winning mentality. Your psychology is better in the tiring end of the season if you know you've already got a trophy under your belt. Winning the first trophy sends a statement across the league, and already labels the new(ish) Chelsea a success.
  • If we won the LC, personally I would call the season a success if we got to the closing stages of every other competition without winning them - though I am very hopeful of winning the League. But there are no guarantees.
  • Every player says 'you feel less tired when you're winning'. Certainly your tiring biceps gain more strength from somewhere when you're lifting a shiny tin pot.
  • Every club and its fans loves a day out at Wembley. It became our second home for a while. Let's get back and keep paying the mortgage. A match against Spurs at Wembley would make the COC final a much more attractive fixture nationally, and internationally, than last year's foregone conclusion and snooze fest.
  • Would also love to beat Spuds when it really counts following our New Year debacle. Possibly the only chance we'll get this season to avenge that 'shocking' defeat, and get it fully out of our system.
  • Liverpool and Spuds (should they get through) are as beatable this season as they have ever been. Man City in the League, Bayern, Real and the rest in the CL, and the chance of a difficult away tie in the FA Cup mean that the League Cup, as of right now, is our best chance of silverware.
  • Swansea, like every league game, is a big game on Saturday. But Liverpool away this week is the biggest, and semi finals against Liverpool take on a larger complexion that the competition itself. Pass the ball to 'slippy' early on, and a great night is on the cards!
