Frank Lampard - Julian Mason

After former* blue Frank Lampard signed with New York City this week some interesting quotes have come out which, despite Frank no longer being a registered player, speak volumes about the guy’s commitment and respect for the Chelsea fans.

Back at the end of May rumours were flying around that QPR(hahahahaha) were going to resume their unsuccessful policy of signing free agent veteran internationals that were surplus to requirement at their previous clubs. Albeit this time the rumours were of players of a slightly higher calibre (Frank Lampard and Rio Ferdinand this time instead of Jose Bosingwa and Park Ji-Sung).

At the time I imagine most Chelsea fans treated the idea of Frank Lampard joining QPR with all the disdain it deserved, surely these reports were just cheap journalism at Chelsea fans expense? Nevertheless with Uncle Harry at the reigns at Loftus Road and a young family based in London there was always a tiny fear that this might actually have come to pass.

Now, at his unveiling in New York, Lampard has revealed that while conversations did in fact take place between him, (by the sounds of it mainly) Frank Snr. and Uncle Harry that playing for QPR,

"wasn't really an option for me... I had 13 years at Chelsea and it’s something very dear to me so it would have been difficult to play for a club so close"

After the fact I can’t say it’s surprising that Super Frank snubbed QPR, this guy has always demonstrated a great affinity of the Chelsea faithful and a genuine appreciation for the respect he got from us, which was so often inexplicably lacking from West Ham and England supporters. It just wouldn’t have been befitting of his character for him to have risked tainting his relationship with the fans by playing for the club around the corner.

Now for the last quote (which may be the most exciting), when asked if he would be linking up with David Villa at Melbourne Heart before the MLS pre-season in January Lampard said he didn’t know, but that he is looking for somewhere to train,

"at the very top level… whether that's on my own or with a club somewhere. I’ll have to see."

Considering Frank's comments at the end of last season about wanting to arrange a proper goodbye to the fans, could he be coming back to train/make a cameo at Chelsea this Autumn? Maybe, or maybe I’m just in dream land after Drogba re-signed yesterday.

*that will just never sound right will it?
