Blind has been one of the players that has come to popular attention during the present World Cup tournament, helping the Netherlands cruise to third place. Given that Chelsea don't have much reinforcement at LB (I suppose that with our recent acquisition, this article comes a bit too late to argue that Blind could be our primary player in that position), and that we could use another central/defensive mid, is there any support for the acquisition of Daley Blind?
Here is the whoscored profile for Blind: http://www.whoscored.com/Players/70033/
His most common positions appears to be in central mid, or as an LB. He can also play as a left wingback, defensive mid, left mid, or even a CB. In other words, he's something of a utility player, with an emphasis on defense and the left flank. Blind's defensive stats are quite good, and we've seen in the WC that he's capable of contributing offensively. He can also give us greater tactical flexibility, slotting well into the 3 at the back system.
Eredivisie defenders often make Luiz appear to be the model of concentration, but Blind doesn't appear to be characterized by such lapses. Bringing in a player from a league like the Eredivisie is a gamble, but given Blind's age, it's likely that he has not yet hit his ceiling, and that he can adjust to the EPL; and he has definitely proven himself to be competitive with some of the best players in the world.
