One summer, and we were almost robbed of not only our vice-captain but also our potential vice-captains.
Frank Lampard had left, so had David Luiz and Ashley Cole. A look at our current squad and there seems no obvious candidate for the vice-captain role. Some might argue that Petr Cech is an obvious candidate but with Thibaut Courtois returning, he might not see much game time, and hence most probably wouldn't be handed the vice-captaincy.
So who should be handed the role? Only JT and Cech had prior experience of being our captain for a prominent amount of time. Others like Ivanovic and Mikel might have had experience of captaining the side for the odd match or two, but those could be discounted. With JT being our captain, and Cech not likely to be our vice-captain, our new vice-captain would likely be someone new, someone who has not captain the side prominently before. Who could it be?
If we go down the ladder, and skip Cech, it's Ivanovic or Mikel, as they are the ones who has actually wore the armband, albeit for just a match or two, while I don't remember anybody else in the squad who wore the armband for us before. In my opinion Ivanovic would be ahead of Mikel given that he is a permanent name on the starting line-up while Mikel isn't.
If we don't go the "ladder" route, we might go the "captains elsewhere" route, with Fabregas and Torres (yes, Torres) falling into this category. Fabregas captained Arsenal, while Torres captained Atletico Madrid (remember?). However both seems unlikely to get the role as Fabregas has just joined and very rarely has we seen a new signing become a captain/vice-captain, while Torres is just Torres.
A recent trend of captaincy selection is to give it to your team's best player or key player, whether or not he has obvious leadership qualities. Messi and Ronaldo are examples. No doubt they are really good, but their leadership qualities are debatable. Messi has always been the quiet one, while Ronaldo's personality isn't entirely suited to being a captain as well. Nevertheless they are captains for their respective countries, because they are the best player in the team. They are leaders in terms of performance and not in terms of leadership quality. If we go this route then it would be Hazard, Oscar, or Matic. But I'm still a bit reserved on their ability to lead the team in JT's absence.
Which route would we go? Who among the above will be our next vice-captain (future captain after JT retires)? Or will it be someone who wasn't mentioned above?
