Chelsea are in the market for a long-term left-back and a starting centre midfielder to partner Nemanja Matić. Both are similarly priced at around £30m.
Luke Shaw's advantages are obvious. He's only 18 and has made the Premier League team of the year and will be going to his first World Cup finals. However he's ridiculously expensive and not an instant upgrade on makeshift left-back Cèsar Azpilicueta. There are a lot of clubs after him and are willing to throw absurd amount of money to get his signature. Signing Shaw would roughly cost £30m and he would require around £100k a week in wages. The figures are a huge overspend on what you're getting with Shaw but he does fill a position of need and it won't have to be addressed for (hopefully) a decade.
Cesc Fàbregas is a proven world class player and also proven in this league but there are major doubts over his ability to play in a double pivot where Chelsea need to address. He's also disliked by Chelsea fans and has said nasty things about Father Jose in the past. There are no doubts about his attacking ability but are his defensive skills good enough to get by next to Matić? His rumoured price is around £30m and his wages would be closer to £150k a week.
So £30m on Shaw or £30m on Fabregas?
