Bassman93, Chelsea Manager

Richard Heathcote

A few weeks back, I mentioned my unsuccessful applications to become Chelsea manager. I promised to share my letters so this is what I am here to do.

This is for everyone's entertainment. I was 14/15 at the time of writing and I was a bit of an idiot. Too much FM08 for sure. Hindsight is 20:20.

I hope you all enjoy the thoughts of my younger self. I think the fact I even got a response was pretty cool.

Here is my first letter. Post Grant sacking. (Also post CL final when Drogba's stock was low).

Dear Peter Kenyon and other members of the board,

I would like to be considered as a candidate for the recently vacated position of manager of Chelsea Football Club. At the age of 14, I have no experience managing a football club and do not have any managerial qualifications, but I feel I should be considered for three main reasons.

I am life-long fan of the club and am immensely proud of this. Although I have not been fortunate to attend a game this season because of the cost, I do watch most games. This means that I am very devoted to the club and want it to succeed. It also means that I know a lot about the players and how they work together. This would mean I could get the best out of the team. I also feel that I could bring in some good new signings and make the style of football that we play more attractive and help us win silverware.

I feel I would bring something new to the club and even though appointing me would cause much controversy, I would be able to cope with the media pressure. I would also be easier to persuade to join and would not need a large wage.

I have already planned ahead and if I were appointed would set my teams up in the formations below. I would sell Didier Drogba, because he has too big an ego and is affecting the team, John Obi Mikel, as his indiscipline has cost us and we have Steve Sidwell as a more professional replacement. Florent Malouda would also go, due to his inconsistency and general poor form, along with Claudio Pizarro, because he has never delivered and been a dead weight.

{formations were images which I can't post, so here is a shamefully honest text equivalent}

All have back 5:

Cech
Bosingwa__Carvalho__Terry__A. Cole

4-4-2
J.Cole__Ballack__Lampard__Kalou
New Striker__Shevchenko

4-3-3
Ballack__Makelele__Lampard
J.Cole__Shevchenko__Kalou

4-2-3-1
Lampard__Ballack
J.Cole__Robinho__Kalou
Shevchenko

As new signings I would buy a few new strikers and wingers such as Robiñho, Messi and Toni.

I hope you consider me as a candidate, but if not I hope my input has been useful. I feel that another suitable manager would be Roberto Mancini. Thank you for reading and I anticipate a swift response.

I had no response from this letter. I suspect Scolari was already lined up.

I was not deterred so here is my second letter. This time in response to the Scolari sacking.

Dear Peter Kenyon and other members of the board,

I am again writing to apply for the newly vacated position of Chelsea manager. Since I last applied for the job I have aged another year (I am now 15) and am wiser and more mature for it. This makes me an even more suitable candidate than the last time. As you can see from recent events you were mistaken to overlook me in your last managerial appointment, but I have got over that disappointment and am ready for another shot.

I am a lifelong Chelsea fan and have membership for this season which I intend to renew. I do not feel there will be any questions over my devotion to our cause and desire for success. I am committed to the club and am also committed to whatever I do and try my best to excel. I am exactly what the club needs as I am only beginning my career so would be able to stay at the club for a long time and provide the consistency in management that has been lacking in previous seasons. As I am only young I will also bring a new take and fresh ideas to the game.

I feel I would bring something new to the club, and make it more accessible to young people today, even though appointing me would cause much controversy, I would be able to cope with the media pressure. I would also be easier to persuade to join and would not need a large wage, possibly even a pay-per-result contract, compared to a world name, which I know is important in the current financial climate.

I think that the current players at the club are a good balance of experience and young talent, which is down to wise investment in the academy system. The long term injuries to Essien and Joe Cole are a blow to the team but such injuries are not uncommon to our club and we have to be able to deal with them. We must use our squad to the full extent if we want to get the best out of the players, which includes the young talent as that cannot develop into professionals without 1st team experience. Finding the right balance is very important but in my opinion our strongest team, bearing in mind injuries would be:

4-4-2 (diamond)
Cech
Bosingwa__Carvalho__Terry__Cole
Mikel
Kalou_______Quaresma
Lampard
Anelka__Drogba

or when Essien returns:

4-3-3
Cech
Bosingwa__Carvalho__Terry__Cole
Lampard__Mikel__Essien
Kalou__Anelka__Quaresma

Tactics are also crucial. I think that, with the team that I prefer, counter-attacking is crucial to scoring goals. This tactic was proven under Mourinho and will prove effective again given the pace of players in our squad. Our defence also needs to be sorted out; the strict, solid defence of a few years ago needs to be rediscovered.

I hope you have seen that you should consider me as a candidate, but if not I hope my input has been useful. Of the other candidates I think fans would like to see someone who has already been at the club. Thank you for reading and I anticipate a swift response.

And here is the response I recieved.

Going back to these letters after nearly 6 years has been a fun experience for me personally. It is great to see how our relationship with players and the club change over time.

I have had a good laugh at some of my transfer suggestions. I am pretty pleased with my early call for us to play 4-2-3-1.

I hope this makes people smile. Enjoy the world cup and I hope we don't have to do another managerial search for a long time! (If it is long enough I can get coaching badges and apply for real, but that isn't the course I am on right now).
