Two Chelsea players were on the fringes of the Spanish national team, with both fullback Cesar Azpilicueta and striker Fernando Torres named in the provisional squad but not guaranteed a trip to Brazil. Apparently, The pair both did enough in training to convince Vincente Del Bosque that they deserved to be on the plane to South America. The final Spanish squad is as follows:
Iker Casillas, Pepe Reina, David De Gea; Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Raul Albiol, Javi Martinez, Juanfran, Jordi Alba, Cesar Azpilicueta; Xavi, Xabi Alonso, Andres Iniesta, Koke, Sergio Busquets, Santi Cazorla, Cesc Fabregas, Juan Mata, David Silva; Pedro, Diego Costa, David Villa, Fernando Torres.
There will be quite a few Chelsea players making the trip this summer, but Torres and Azpilicueta were two that I wasn't sure would be there. The fullback because he doesn't seem to be a favorite of the national team coach despite probably being their best option at right back, while Torres just hasn't been consistently good for quite a long while. It seems common sense has prevailed int he case of Azpilicueta though, and Torres must have another set of dirty pictures.
Good luck to both in Brazil, and stay healthy.
