i maybe an average punter and probably dont know much about football but i have one gripe with some fans about chelsea's defensive side of the game. that annoyance is the constant notion that players especially wingers not tracking back and helping out their fullbacks.
i was under the impression that the new look chelsea was one off high pressing, high intensity defending to win the ball back high up the pitch, making it easier to create chances. even though i didnt want him in the summer, willian was bought because apparently he was good at it. this paved the way for mata and de bruyne because of their lack of understanding and mostly to their poor application.
however as our last three, probably most important games have shown this was all tosh, codswallop, call it what you want. the high pressing has disappeared and we're back to good old deep defending on our on 18 yard box. this has made players like hazard displeased with the setup, not allowing him to produce his magic in the final third and score the goals the fans love to see.
most people will probably say this is knee-jerk but im writing this, pretty poorly mind you, as a result of the importance of the games. what happened to looking at a players creative side of the game before we make comments like; is he hardworking, can he tackle. i maybe living in the past but i grew up watching flair players attacking not playing as a wingbacks.
what are your thoughts on the the defensive responsibilities of our players? (not on how badly written this is)
