Vitesse & Their Pursuit For The Honey

With our blue-blooded bumble bees having spent far too long in recent matches obsessing over pretty petals & pollen, I thought it was worth spending some time to write about their dwindling chances of achieving that all important Champions League spot.

Like their brothers across the pond, Vitesse have ruled themselves out of the Eredivisie title, which is unsurprising given their history...finishing runners-up 5 times over an illustrious period few years, just 100 years ago. Since then the closest Vitesse have come to securing such honours was a 3rd place finish in 1998.

Currently positioned in 3rd place (or a fake 4th place as our Jose would have you believe), Vitesse's season could already be viewed as something of a success. However...given that just earlier this season (November 13) they were sitting pretty at the top of Eredivisie..expectations have somewhat risen over the course of the season.

Things are looking ever so tight with just 2 points separating the four sides. It would therefore be daft to completely rule Vitesse out of a 2nd place spot at this stage of the season, especially if Vitesse manage to get out of their recent rut. Poor performances in their last three have seen them accumulate just 1 point out of a possible 9.

  • For those that are unfamiliar with the Dutch league, it is the Top 2 that qualify for the Champions League.
  • 1st (aka. Ajax) will be automatically jumping into the Group Stages next season.
  • The remaining 4 teams battle it out for 2nd and the remaining place for Europe's top competition (3rd qualifying round).
  • 3rd & 4th go straight into the pool for the Europa league (3rd qualifying round)
  • 5th to 8th participate in a play-off for the remaining Europa spot (2nd qualifying round).

However, let's look at their fixtures in comparison to the vijanden (enemies), to try and sneak a peak at their chances:

Those fixtures in bold are those that are most likely to be fruitful for Vitesse, being against those in the top half. Uppercase has been used for home & Lowercase for away matches.

  • As you can see from this, it is Twente Enchede who probably have the greatest opportunity to take that fruity 2nd place, boasting 5 extremely favourable fixtures with opposition down in the bottom ten places of the table. With their game in hand also, Vitesse will almost certainly need to claim maximum points, in order to prevent Steve McClaren's former side from claiming claiming second-class honours.
  • Next, you can see that Feyenoord Rotterdam (again with a game in hand) have their destiny in their hands. Opposition is more difficult than Twente, with the game versus PSV being of JUMBO importance (a draw would be just fabulous for our blue bees). AZ Alkmaar also have the potential to cause an upset, having played out a draw when both teams met last time around.
  • PSV have the hardest run-in of all. Having clinched 2nd on GD just last season, it looks that much more difficult for them this time around. With only 4 games, 2 (in bold) being against opponents in the top 6...it's hard to envisage PSV achieving much better than 8 points from their remaining games.
  • Last but not least, our vibrant Vitesse have the chance to define their whole entire season with one game...against Frank de Boer's unassailable Ajax. Should they be able to grab 3 points at home in this match, they will surely carry confidence into the remaining 3 "winnable" games. A point is predicted, but should they grab 3...I fancy their chances. This is despite their inferior goal difference (to both Twente & Feyenoord).

With fixtures taken care of, how could the final standings look come the end of the season?

Should Vitesse exceed my expectations and beat Ajax, it puts them in a fabulous position to gain an additional 2 points on their rivals. Despite their poor GD, a win at home against this season's likely Champions could well prove to be the difference. In 7 days time we will know, so make sure you tune in for that mammoth match on 6th April!

Also, make sure you provide your take on the run-in...and contribute your thoughts on what you think Vitesse can achieve for 2013/14....
