The Story of Run-ins

Today is a public holiday in India. The festival is called Holi - Festival of Colours. And all I can think of is painting the town Blue just so that I can get the weekend gone by off my memory. This has possibly been the worst weekend of the season. Looking at the fixture list, with all four teams playing away, ours clearly was the easiest tie. I was actually positively hopeful of City, Liverpool and Arsenal to drop points and for us to finally open up a good lead. At the cost of being repetitive, what a disappointment. I don't even want to go in the match analysis and what went right and what went wrong. This was a nightmare and we need to wake up.

Good thing about this team is that we always have a reaction, or at least it would seem . Throughout the season, barring the funny losses to Basel, I think we have had a pretty good reaction to getting beaten. The first real defeat of the season was away to Everton. That was followed by a streak of 9 games (WWDWWWWWW) without defeat which included wins over Arsenal and City and a draw away to Tottenham. The streak was broken against Newcastle which was one of the more disappointing performances of the season. This was followed by WDWLWWL. So through November till the first week of December, we had 4 wins 3 losses and 1 draw. The teams we faced in this run were Newcastle, Schalke, WBA, West Ham, Basel, Southampton, Sunderland, Stoke. Not a single big team and had it been Arsenal facing these teams you would have bet on them winning all of these.

But after this run of games, came the beautiful run - WWWDWWWWWWWDWWDLWDWWL. The two losses here are the City and Villa games. While our record in the Premier League has been awesome, but just on the basis of the run in we have had since Feb, we can divide the run in as before the West Brom game (which is the third draw) and the run-in since that game. That run-in would be DLWDWWL. Doesn't make for a good read, does it? And worryingly enough, it resembles the Nov - Dec run in. What we need, is another beautiful run starting from the Gala game. We need to kick some ass. And we need to man up. I do not want to see another performance or result like Villa.
