Recently there have been a lot of Mata transfer rumours hitting the rumour mills and the likes of twitter, with Mata actually becoming a United Kingdom trend since after the Manchester United game (when the rumours of his a seeming impending United move started)
I'd just like to point out that I think someone as amazing and talented as Juan should be talked about at all times but I digress.
Anyway, the reason I think the first tabloids reported these rumours was because of Graham Souness on Sky giving his idiotic opinion on things related to football and that is never good. He said that Manchester United needed to sign some "Quality players" not being too specific on what positons needed to be strengthened but just the fact they needed a "midfielder". He then goes on to say "why don't they bid for Mata? It's definite that he is leaving, there is no way he is staying anymore"
I completely disagree with this notion that because Mata has been benched he is instantly leaving. The fact Mata was picked over Schurle to make the bench when Schurle is the more direct aggresive player and the one more likely to make an impact off the bench is testament to the high regard Mourinho still has for Mata. The Mata and De bruyne cases are different and I strongly believe Mourinho wants to adapt Mata to his new style of play, this has been touched upon by other bloggers here)
Secondly, as Gary Nevile the infinitely more respectable pundit said, Mata cannot fit into the United team unless they seriously change their formation which doesnt necessarily make them any stronger in the short or long term. They already have rooney and kagawa and it's clear Rooney has cemented the no.10 position as his own due to his stamina and relentless energy amongst other things. If Mata had a chance, you'd think Kagawa would currently get a lot more game than he does now. Mata wouldn't fit in their team at all. You could argue he would make it into their winger position but he is a defensive liability and not a traditional United winger. They already have Januzaj, even Moyes knows that fielding Mata as well would be a fatal mistake to make in terms of defensive output from wingers.
Thirdly, and most importantly imo, the rumours have come from silly tabloids and have been strengthened by those hopeless United twitter acounts who thought the likes of Fabreagas, Gundogan, Strootman, Thiago, Ronaldo, Bale etc... was theirs.
I do wish that Mata gets more game-time and that is more likely to happen with the games coming thick and fast once the Champions league is back. Lets hope Mata makes a big enough improvement on his defensive performances to MERIT a place in the big games.
Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy the United - Sunderland game 2mmrw ;)
