With Matic bolstering our midfield position, we now have the ability to play 4-3-3 formation with enough depth for rotation.
I was just wondering what do the WAGNH readers think is the best midfield combination to play in such a formation?
Personally, I have no idea. The main issue that I am uncertain of is the difference between John Obi Mikel and Nemanja Matic. I am unsure of what these two players bring to the field defensively and offensively if placed in either a DM or CM position. Obviously, I know of Mikel's qualities as a DM or the holding CM. But his offensive capabilities is an interesting case to consider, if unshackled from his defensive responsibilities. (see this and this, and of course not forgetting he's having his most prolific season so far)
I guess the question to be asked is: could and/or should Matic and Mikel start together? Or should this be a defensive option against stronger clubs? Or should this only occur to shut up shop and see through another "boring boring 1-0 win" (with a highly likely late Essien substitution)?
Only thing I am certain of is that either Nemanja Matic or John Obi Mikel will be playing in the DM position. And this means that both Frank Lampard and Ramires will have more license to bomb forward on a regular basis now.
With that, I leave this poll to you guys. Please let me know your thoughts, reasons, points and arguments in the comments below.
Note: This poll is only based on our currently available midfielders. Please do not bring up any of the youths.
(For the sake of the indecisive readers, I left out David Luiz from the midfield trio combination although we all know that he is more than capable of playing there. )
