So, we've been pursuing Rooney for weeks now. Both the parties have publicly acknowledged that. Chelsea need a striker, Rooney's a decent striker and unsettled at his club, Chelsea can afford him, so just usual transfer business. Or is it?
Rooney, for the past decade or so, has been (arguably) Manchester United's most important player. Manchester United won the most PL titles in that time, making Alex Ferguson one of the most successful managers of all time. He was (and I absolutely hate to say this) the best manager during that time in England. But now he's gone,
and perhaps the only guy who truly unsettled Fergie during his tenure has returned to the PL, The Happy One as he's known here. He has made Rooney his prime (and perhaps only) target. Getting him, would not only strengthen a weak spot in Chelsea's squad, but would also signal a strong intent. Remeber how Arsenal last year sold their captain, their most important player to Manchester United, pretty much signifying their downfall from title challengers to also-rans. Getting Rooney could mean the same for us.
Now getting Rooney would not mean that Manchester United would completely disappear from the picture, far from it. But it would be a message to everyone from Mou, "He(Fergie)'s gone, and it's my time now."
How incredible would it be for Moyes to start his first season following in Fergie's footsteps by losing such an important player? It'll give a strong psychological boost to our goal of becoming the top dog in England.
Now, Rooney's signing may not make a great sense financially, but as far as mind games are concerned, there are few that could better this one.
Or you know, as I said earlier, this could just be a another transfer.
P.S. - Keep in mind I'm writing this at 5:36 a.m. after a few drinks earlier because of a simple thought that came in my mind while I was sitting in the toilet, so..yeah.
