I was recently browsing the Busby Babe part of SB Nation (http://www.thebusbybabe.com/) and they were running a poll which I decided to plagiarise. Looking through their list of player names, though, I thought, jesus, what a rubbish lot they've got to choose from: Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Evra(!) were all name checked as candidatesin the opening paragraph. Not sarcastically.
For Chelsea we appear to have a whole load of incredibly likable players (not even including the non-first teamers) - for instance, Juan Mata, David Luiz, Oscar, Essien and Frank would all make excellent teddy bears. Petr Cech, Brana and Ramires are endearingly goofy. Andre Schurrle, Marco Van Ginkel, and Fernando Torres make school girls swoon (and even me, if Andre is wearing a suit). And John Terry, well, John Terry is John Terry.
Growing up my favourite player was always Gustavo Poyet. Maybe because I began supporting Chelsea after watching the Super Cup again Real Madrid when Wise laid it off to Gus on the edge of the box and he hammered it into the corner, winning the game for us 1-0. Maybe as he had that never-say-die attitude, that hard b@stard streak, combined with his great technique. Maybe for his super flat forehead.I don't know, but he was my favourite.
Since Gus I've not really had a favourite player but there are some that are more endearing than others - I'd love to go for a drink with Petr Cech, Juan Mata's blog is just wonderful (seriously, he actually reads literature!), and Oscar is brilliant on and off the pitch. Every time I see Ivanovic it makes me smile, and so he's my current favourite.
