Just look at that hair...
UPDATE: EMRE CAN HAS SIGNED FOR BAYER LEVERKUSEN
(1 day after I wrote this. I hate my life)
I've seen many reports stating that Bayern Munich trio Luiz Gustavo, Emre Can and Diego Contento will all be allowed to leave the Bavarian giants. Gustavo has been continuously linked with Wolfsburg (for some reason) and Contento (who I don't care about) is rumored to be close to a deal with Werder Bremen.
So that leaves 19 year-old Emre Can, and I feel that he is a fascinating prospect. Can is an all-action midfield who very often is cast in the holding role. He also has experience playing in the pivot. He captained the third place winning German squad at the U-17 world cup two years ago; and was immense in the box to box role. Can also was a starter at the U-19 Euros, where Germany were runners-up. He has made one appearance for the U-21 team and is backed to nail down a prominent role. German media outlets and pundits alike rate Can very highly, seeing him as a star in the making. (As you may have guessed Can is of Turkish descent; much like Sam Khedira, Ozil and Ilkay Gündogan)
Weighing in at 180 pounds and standing at 6 foot 1, Can is not your average 19 year old. He uses these physical tools incredibly well. He is strong in the tackle, and can really impose his will physically. He runs well and is very balanced on the ball. Can is solid in the air as well, both defensively and attacking-wise. Based on his age and physical traits alone he is an interesting prospect; but there is so much more to his game.
What really sets Can apart is his impeccable technique and skill on the ball. He is incredibly polished and composed, especially when put under pressure. Can has a very good range of passing but more importantly he has the vision to pick them out. He is very tidy with his short passing and rarely makes the wrong decision in a crowded midfield. He can also unlock the defense with his through-balls and long distribution from the deep-lying position. Can really has the skill set best suited for this position.
That being said, he has plenty to offer going forward as well. His strength on the ball and stellar close control enables him to go on driving runs through the middle of the park* (See video vs Mexico). He has a tendency to cap off those runs with a smart pass or a good shot attempt. Can has the confidence to shoot when dared to and can make you pay. His finishing could always improve, but his technique is solid. Can is very good at combining with his teammates going forward and isn't afraid to try an ambitious flick or two. His ability on the ball for such a big man is pretty staggering. Can isn't scared to take on a man 1v1 and has a bag of tricks not normally associated with a holding midfielder* (See video vs Barça)
In terms of weakness's, its difficult to find something that really stands out. His finishing could improve, but that's something that pretty much every young holding mid could work on. Improving his positioning and tactical awareness are also things that only need fine tuning. Its difficult for me to really point to something that needs drastic improvement. He looks a complete player.
I believe Emre Can is absolutely a player that could make the grade at Chelsea. I would have loved to see us make a move for him under normal circumstances, let alone these current ones. IF REPORTS ARE TO BE BELIEVED* He is currently in Bayern's shop window and he has garnered interest from England, Germany and Turkey. While I would love to see us swoop for Gustavo, Emre Can looks an absolute gem. He may not be ready to slide into into the starting lineup just yet; but I don't see why he couldn't within a year or two. Since Bayern seem OK with letting him go and his contract set to expire in June; I don't see why a reasonable fee couldn't be agreed. I say go for it, before someone else does.
*I've seen rumors of loans for a while, but over the last few days it's been of a permanent transfer
What do you guys think? Should we make a move? Did this article suck?
This is my first fanpost and I would appreciate feedback.
+ I also would want Khedira/Gustavo/De Rossi for the here and now
There isn't much video of him but I have included the two short examples from the post:
Mexico run/goal (plus bonus juggling)
Barça 1v1 dribble
