What does Rooney want? A transfer analysis

A couple seasons ago , Rooney was a legitimately world class player and one of the finest in the premier league. But he's fallen on hard times lately and is coming off the back of 2 disappointing seasons. The emergence of other talents like RVP , Welbeck and Kagawa , mean his position in the starting lineup is far from assured.

Lately he's been making a lot of noise. He's not happy at Man United. He wants out. But why does he want out? Should Chelsea take him? I think the answer to the last question is hidden in the first.

Let's go over Rooney's possible motivations

1)Rooney wants more money

Rooney gets paid 250k+/wk , but he wants more. He knows if he agitates for a move he might find some rich club (PSG, Monaco , Man City , Chelsea) willing to give him a pay raise, or force Man United to give him a raise to keep him from leaving.

2)Rooney wants assurance of an guaranteed starting position

Rooney is unhappy at being displaced by Van Persie and Welbeck this season. He hope that agitating for a move will force Moyes to promise him playing time , or to sell him to another club that will make him a starter.

3)Rooney just wants to know if he's in the manager's plans and just wants an opportunity to prove he can do well

Rooney has had a rocky relationship with manager Moyes since he left Everton. Rooney fears Moyes might not see him in the team and he could spend the year on the bench. He wants Moyes to promise him the opportunity to impress and earn a spot , or sell him , so he can play elsewhere.

Any of these motivations is plausible. If Rooney is moving for selfish reasons (1 or 2), it would not be wise to take him. He would be unwilling to take a pay cut and may cause morale problems when he has to share time with ba or Lukaku.

Now I think if reason 3) is his main concern , this is worth our while. If Moyes thinks he is not in his plans, we could get him for a reduced transfer fee. If Rooney's main motivation is to prove himself , he may be willing to take a pay cut for more football. What's more he will be motivated to prove he can play at the top level. He will be motivated to improve his fitness and play harder in every game. A fit and motivated Rooney may be a deadly player.

What is Rooney's motivation? Is he worth it? See the poll.
