Andre Schurrle* is, I hope, growing on some of the Chelsea supporters who were miffed that we signed him. He's articulate, bright, good looking and scores some very nice goals -- the video above should give you a taster if you're curious. In fact, he's quite a lot like a left-sided Hulk without the tubbyness or the boneheaded decision making or the €40 million transfer fee.
*Umlaut now permanently removed by Chelsea.
But if none of that has convinced you so far, just look at how much he enjoys being here:
I remember the game at Stamford Bridge as it was my first Champions League match. I remember the stadium being right in the middle of the city, and it was the game where Michael Ballack returned to Chelsea for the first time and the supporters were brilliant with him.
It wasn't such a great match for Leverkusen because we lost the match 2-0, but it was a great experience for me to play at Stamford Bridge.
There are plenty of transfers in which it seems like players have gone to the highest bidder, or the most ambitious team (not that there's anything wrong with that, Eden), but with Schurrle, who's been linked with us for the past 18 months or so, it seems like this switch was genuinely motivated by a fascination with the club. And that's incredibly refreshing.
I really hope that the Schurrle doubters come around. He's a majestic young player who genuinely wants to be here, and he has all the ingredients -- bar initial popularity -- to be a hero at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea have a glut of attacking players, but we also have a glut of football matches, and I'm sure Schurrle (and Kevin de Bruyne, and Victor Moses, and Oscar) will all get their chances to shine.
