With Arsenal and Spurs winning their matches, our draw with Liverpool leaves us at 4th spot with 62 points. With our remaining fixtures, the match against Spurs will quite possibly decide our season. And should we end up losing out on a top 4 spot and Champions League football next season, it would be a massive loss for this football club. However at this point we have to consider that the possibility is there, and therefore this post will controversially be about the few positives I believe there are for Chelsea Football Club, if we miss out on Champions League football next season.
1. Not spending millions on new players, forced to use our own.
Now this can be both positive and negative, but let's look at the positive side. Firstly Chelsea FC have a lot of good players out on loan, and many of those are young talents. One of them and surely one of the best is Lukaku. Lukaku is a huge talent, and is scoring many goals for West Brom, while Chelsea struggle with Torres (Yes he has his moments, but let's be honest, Torres is not who he once was. If Chelsea finishes in the top 4, then chances are we will spend lots of lots of money on a world class striker like Falcao, Cavani, or Gomez. But if we don't finish in the top 4, then suddenly you are left with the less prestigious targets such as Remy or Bony, that is if they want to go to a club without Champions League football. Obviously Chelsea will try to sign a striker regardless of what spot we end up on, however without Champions League football it will not be one that takes up the space a big name striker would. So not getting a place in the top 4 would make it easier for the club to actually use players we already have. Perhaps instead of buying the finished article we would make our own. It would give players like Lukaku the opportunity to step up. Though Lukaku is not the only Chelsea talent out on loan, I mean look at De Bruyne, what a player he's going to be.
2. A chance to bring in a long term manager with love for the club.
No Champions League football means no Mourinho for Chelsea. While this is a downside, it can also be an upside. Because instead of hiring a Mourinho type manager, someone who stays for a few years and then leaves, we could hire a less hyped manager who knows and loves the club, like our very own Gianfranco Zola who is doing excellent at Watford. Obviously the step is big for him to take, but it would provide stability if he is allowed to stay long term. And with the lowered expectations I think not being in the Champions League brings. Granted we would still be Chelsea, but we won't be expected to win the title the year after if we finish 5th. The manager could be a long term option rather than a short term option as most managers of Chelsea have been in previous years. It would give the manager a chance to build himself and the club up.
3. We would still sign players, but perhaps not spend as much.
Sure it would be nice to see Falcao up top, Fellaini in the pivot with Modric, and Hummels at the back. But they do not come for free obviously, and thinking about FFP, it sounds like a dream rather than reality. There is the possibility of Fellaini coming to Chelsea due to the Belgian connection, and a bigger payment, regardless of Champions League football. Sadly this is not likely, but we have good players at his position. We have a player on loan that plays for Real Madrid and his name is Michael Essien. Yes he has been playing a lot at right back, but him and Ramires, or even De Bruyne in the pivot is not the worst case scenario for Chelsea. Also we could save money by signing less prestigious targets.
There are obviously more negative, than positive sides of finishing outside the top 4. But in conclusion I will say that we have lots of good players out on loan that could play a much bigger role in the coming seasons if we finish in 5th place. We will also avoid spending huge money for Falcao or any other big name striker, which is good. I believe Lukaku, though young deserves his chance. I believe De Bruyne can play in the pivot with Mikel or Essien, and I believe that Bruma can play a role at the back. Maybe we would then also get a manager for the long term rather than the short term, and this manager could be someone like Zola. I still personally believe we can manage top 4, and again there are more negatives than positives, and I would personally love to see Mourinho back at Chelsea, with Cavani or Falcao, and Fellaini. Top 4 would also keep players such as Hazard happier(We don't want him to go to Real Madrid!) Chelsea is a club that is expected to be in the Champions League, so by all means we must do everything we can to get the top 4 finish. This article more or less tries to deal with the question; "What if we don't finish in the top 4?" Putting everything aside, Chelsea will still be Chelsea regardless of what happens at the end of the season. So stay positive Chelsea fans whatever happens.
