Debate on Nat Chalobah and internal development

Now we all love Chelsea. We all appreciate efforts by the academy to develop Chelsea class players. Now it is without a doubt that the clubs philosophy is to use the loan system to evaluate and help prospects along. The gem of the academy is most probably Nat Chalobah, depending on how you feel about Josh. Nathaniel has had a strong year on loan at Watford.

Naturally people are looking at the next step for him or other loan playerswho have succeeded. Also, it is easier to evaluate in hindsight to say we shoulda kept KDB or Rom and that they would have helped this year. I am about to do the same sort of thing now with Chalobah but the reasoning will differ a bit since his situation is rather different than both of theirs.

Without touching on the belgians too much you can say look Rom hadnt played in a year, effectively, and he was gonna have to scrap for minutes again. KDB if i remember correctly wasnt all that great in the pre-season (remember that when the club was in crisis and Marko Marin was "good"?) and was deemed surplus. Both positions were a little more position of strength.

Now for Chalobah, could play CM or CB. CB probably was covered although he could have helped. Obviously CM has been a blind spot for the club this year. With Romeu going down we only have 3CMs. So it is pretty easy to look back and say, damn we coulda used him for depth. And it was also true then. Remember how pissed people were that Raul and Ess left with no one coming in and we thought damn this gonna get tuff. Naturally the concern for not loaning players is that theyll rot on the bench ie Josh in the basket. Think about how we all hate a double pivot without a defensively responsible player(Romeu/mikel).

Now consider that weve played 23 games like that. Injuries occur and it severely f'ed us in that position and even with Oriol we wasnt convincing. Basically my main point is that a young player playing one game at Chelsea is better than one game at Watford. But the question then becomes what is the conversion rate? would you rather 20cfc starts or 35 at WFC?
