It's a question I've been pondering and I wonder if any of you have. I'm going to outline some reasons why:
Petr Cech: Petr has been terrific. Once more he finds a way to save our ass time and again. Still coming up with crucial saves, is a leader, loves the club. He's everything you want. Also Petr is only 30. We've had a top class goalkeeper for 8 years and he still has another 5-6 years at the top. Why would you want to ever say goodbye to that? I know I wouldn't.
Courtois' development: When Chelsea signed Courtois I don't know if they knew how quickly he was going to develop. He was very good at Genk but he still was raw and young. He was 18. They made a good decision to loan him out to Atletico. I didn't know if he was going to get a ton of games. He automatically becomes the starter. Plays brilliantly and Atletico win the Europa League. This season, he's even better. 18 Clean Sheets in 32 games. It's remarkable. Guy is going to be top class. Now onto the issue.
I am of the belief this will be Courtois' last year at Atletico. I think he'll come to England and have a year on loan. If he fits in well he will finally go to the Chelsea first team. We've seen how Chelsea have been with their senior players. I wouldn't rule out they send Cech packing or put him on the bench. We also have the issue though that Courtois probably isn't going to want to sit on the bench. So what do you do? Do you go with the young, talented, upstart or the old master? Judging by some comments I've seen and how Chelsea have treated Lamps, how long it took to give Cole a contract, Carvalho and Ballack and on it's likely its Courtois who takes over.
While I'm not saying I don't think Courtois is going to be world class and wouldn't want him I don't want to lose what Petr Cech brings. He still has a good 5-6 years. We have talented goalkeepers in our youth system. I do believe Jamal Blackman can be a good keeper. I also think that Petr can be a good mentor to our young keepers and can only do good in their development. For these reasons in my opinion I don't know if it was the best decision to have signed Courtois.
That's just my opinion would like to see what you guys think.
