Good news everyone! Demba Ba won't be out as long as feared! In fact, the striker may even start against Wigan. After being fitted for a special mask to protect his nose, which was broken by a high boot from Fabricio Coloccini, the Senegal international returned to training. The Daily Mail has pictures. The return of Ba so soon after a nasty injury can only help Chelsea at this point. No matter what you think if Fernando Torres, this wouldn't have been a great time to be down to just one fit striker.
Right now, there's only speculation linking Ba to a start on Saturday, but I think there's a decent, if not good, chance he starts against Wigan. He hasn't played serious minutes since the ill-fated trip to Swansea which saw Eden Hazard sent off for appearing to kick a ball boy. That was more than two weeks ago. In that time, Ba has only played around 50 minutes of football. Torres has played around 140. Granted, Ba went off injured last weekend, but he should be preferred.
The only thing which might see him sat on the bench again is our upcoming fixture list. If he can only play once per week, as has been suggested, resting him against Wigan, who we should beat with any striker, frees him up for both legs of our Europa League tie against Sparta Prague. It would, however, rule him out of our away trip to Manchester City.
At the end of the day, we won't know until about an hour before kickoff if we'll see the bemasked Demba Ba leading the line, but until then, look at the pictures and bask in the glory of BA-tman!
UPDATE: Of course, Ba is cup-tied in the Europa League, meaning that he'll likely start in place of Torres this weekend at home to Wigan, and the FA Cup replay at home to Brentford, and the match at the Etihad.
