John Terry retires from England duty

The BBC's Dan Roan has some shocking news for us today -- former England captain John Terry has announced his retirement from international duty:

I feel the FA have made my position with the national team untenable. Representing and captaining my country is what I dreamed of as a boy and it has been a truly great honour. I have always given my all and it breaks my heart to make this decision. I wish Roy and the team every success for the future.

It's not difficult to see why Terry, who has been capped 78 times over the past decade, has stepped down. The FA have twice stripped him of the England captaincy and he's currently in the process of being charged over the infamous Anton Ferdinand incident from last October. This move will also help his Chelsea career by giving him a bit more rest, something that I imagine he desperately needs these days.

Still, it's a surprising development, and I wonder if the announcement now has anything to do with the Ferdinand case. If so, more news could be coming...
