I am really getting sick of club's trying to ask exhorbitant amounts of money for their players, simply because we are Chelsea. Internacional want Oscar's transfer to be the most expensive in Brasilian history, €33 million which makes his asking price at least £26 million. Shaktar value Willian at more than Hazard which means they are demanding at least £34 million for him. Porto are still playing hardball with Hulk too as they are holding out for €50 million, at least £39 million. All of these players are very good but are any of them worth those prices? I really don't think so.
Oscar is currently valued at £8.8 million on transfermarkt which is probably a bit low. 2 goals and 6 assists in 11 appearances already this season is very impressive and I don't think that there is much doubt that Oscar could turn out to be a great player. I want to compare his prospective transfer to that of Kaka (a player who went on to win the Ballon D'Or). When he transfered from Sao Paulo to Milan in 2003, Kaka had racked up 46 goals in 125 matches (I couldn't find the data for his assists but I would expect it to be at least 1/2 of his goals, which would give a ratio of 0.5 goals/assists per game. Oscar's stats in a similar 3 seasons period preceeding his transfer, Oscar's stats were 19 goals and 22 assists in 84 appearances, with a similar ratio of 0.5 goals/assists per game. Sao Paulo probably could have asked for more money during the transfer of Kaka but I doubt that they would have started asking for triple his current market value. I understand that the value on transfermarkt is not the bible to go by, but it is probably a good barometer of the player's actual value. Hulk's current value is £30 million, £10 million less than Porto's current asking price.Willian is worth more than Hazard according to Shahktar.
I like all of these players and think that they would offer a lot to the squad. However, I think it is time to tell these clubs that they are going to get no money. No other club is going to offer the money that they are asking for so they will end up with nothing. Lets look at other targets and let these clubs sit there without the money. £20 million for Oscar, £35 million for Hulk and £25 million for Willian. One cent more and pull the plug.
There are plenty of other good young cheaper talents out there that we can look at. For the right wing, we could probably get Muller for £25 million, James Rodriguez from Porto for less than £15 million, Adam Johnson for less than £10 million.
I don't think that we desperately NEED another CM for this season. Of course Modric would be great and I would still like him for £40 million or less but if we don't get him, its not the end of the world. Lampard will play alongside the defensive midfielder for the majority of the games and Ramires will probably play there for a lot of games too.
Debuchy for £6 million and I wouldn't be too upset about the state of the squad after that.
I think we need to establish that we are not going to pay whatever clubs want. It is hard because have a history of paying significant amounts for players, but we need to have some balance. I am sure that the club is aware of this but I wish they could come out and say we are pulling out of these players because their clubs are asking too much money.
