There has been quite a few articles earlier today on the double pivot role, considering Chelsea does play a 4-2-3-1 formation next season. Both Graham and Stephen wrote pieces on who should be the ideal midfielder for us next season to link up the defense to attack. Luka Modric is an option, he's one of the best midfielders in the epl, he passes well, is quick to track back to defend and can easily link up our defense to the midfielders higher up. But he isn't going to come cheap and with signings of Hazard and maybe Hulk, that poses a serious threat to meeting with the terms of FFP. Another option is Javi Martinez but I doubt Athletic are gonna let him go at a reasonable price. Now looking at our current squad, who are the players that can play in the double pivot role?
Frank Lampard and Mikel. The regular starters for big games in that position last season. Both of them played well, hardly ever lost the ball, defended pretty well but did hardly anything to link up with the attack. And age is not on Lampard's side so he is gonna be more or less a rotational player.
Michael Essien is an option but he hasn't been as good after his injury, made rash tackles lost a little bit of pace and was caught out of position quite a few tiimes.
Oriol Romeu has been mostly overlooked the latter part of last season. He did play well as a holding midfielder in a 4-3-3 and can link up defense to attack but his lack of experience is a fact that can make him only a bit part player as we've seen with most youngsters at Chelsea.
David Luiz. Whether he should play in a midfield role is a old argument. I personally think he will fit in well in the double pivot as he can defend, likes to go forward (something he tends to do even as a CB) and passes well to the attack as we've seen him do quite a few times last season. Let's just test him as a midfielder pre season and if he does excel he should be considerd as an option for the double pivot role. Ivanovic can play as a CB in case Terry or Cahill gets injured with VDW, Azpilicueta or Isla (or any other new RB we buy) playing as RB.
Ramires can also be considered as an option but I don't think he should be played there, he isn't much of a help to the defense nor to the attack at that position as we've seen in the away game against Napoli
