According to The Guardian Chelsea are close to signing Hulk from FC Porto for a fee rumoured to be in the region of £38 million. In my opinion this would be a great signing for Chelsea as a club and a great addition to our attacking threat, the one downside to this transfer though? Ramires losing his place.
Throughout last season Ramires was a key player for Chelsea, his stamina, pace and team work ethic was vital to Chelsea's double winning side. At the start of the season he was played in the centre of midfield in a 4-3-3 formation, however from around January onward he was shifted out to the right-wing in a 4-2-3-1. He clicked into position here and made the role his own, his performances were vital and match winning. However with the almost certain transfers of Hulk and Eden Hazard, what will come of Ramires?
Hulk and Hazard will want to join the club as long as they are given a lot of first team football. This will mean both of them playing on opposite wings in a 4-2-3-1 formation, Hazard on the left, Mata in the centre and Hulk on the right. This means that Hulk will occupy the position that Ramires performed so well in last season. The obvious answer to the question of where to play Ramires would be to move him back to CM with either Lampard, Essien, Mikel or Romeu?
I feel that this could work, but only if it were deployed in the right way. Ramires top attributes are his Stamina, Pace and movement, these are all down to his athleticism and not paricularly his technical ability. To play CM you need to be a good passer, tackler and all round good technical player, something which Ramires is not. He suited playing on the wing because of his athleticism , whereas placing CM will not use his best attributes.
if he were to play CM he would need a partner that would compliment him, basically someone who is assured defensively and will cover him when he goes forward. The obvious choice for this would be Mikel, he rarely crosses the half way line and is disiplined in the way he plays. Mikel would make the tackle's and do the grafting while Ramires goes forward to support the attack. The only problem with this is that neither Mikel or Ramires are good passers, they both give the ball away far too often and are inaccurate with far too many passes. So the next idea would be to pair Ramires and Lampard, Ramires going forward and the ageing Lampard staying back to help. However there is another problem with this, neither are known for their defensive skills and make too many fouls and Lampard is and always will be a very attacking player which mean he could leave the defence exposed when he goes forward.
The manager, whoever that may be, will have to find the balance to this and the coaches will have to get him to work on his technical skills. Whatever we happens we have to make sure that one of our best players last season is included in the starting 11 in some way, Ramires is a key player and must still be a big part of us somehow next season.
Let me know how or if you think we should deploy Ramires next season and who should partner him?
