Being from Northern California, I am a huge Oakland A's fan, and with that, I despise the San Francisco Giants. When the Giants signed Barry Zito a few years back, I was actually very happy because I knew he was worth no where near what they were paying for him. He was a joke for the Giants, and I enjoyed every moment of it. But then something crazy happened in 2010.... They won the World Series. Barry Zito had absolutely no bearing on that Championship, and in fact, I don't even think he was on the World Series roster. But I contend that if the Giants would have not signed Barry Zito, they wouldn't have won the World Series. Every roster move, trade, etc... had to take into account Zito's contract. It set off a chain of events that eventually culminated in that elusive championship. In my eyes, it all became worth it in that instant. If I were a Giants fan, I would take the horrible Zito deal any day of the week if it meant winning just one World series.
Fast forward a few years later to our beloved Chelsea, and the awful deal for Fernando Torres. I am one of the biggest Torres detractors around, and I knew it was a terrible deal right away. But... After yesterday, I would take that deal 100 out of 100 times. Again, I contend that Torres' deal started a chain of events that eventually led us to raising the Champion's League trophy.
