Chelsea 0 - Manchester City 0: Initial reaction and community rating form

Clive Rose

Chelsea kept a clean sheet for the first time since defeating Nordsjaelland, but unfortunately they failed to score. With that, the Rafa Benitez era is officially underway.

That was one of the stranger games I've ever watched. It was a fun game to watch, despite neither team playing particularly well when in possession of the ball. A scoreless draw seems about right for this one, and frankly it's just not a bad result at all considering the upheaval earlier in the week.

Here are a few thoughts in the immediate aftermath of this one:

  • Tactically speaking, this wasn't a big change from our most recent games. The basic shape was more or less the same, and the little tighter defense is likely as much due to a mid-week sacking causing refocus as anything to do with the work of the new manager. We just won't be able to make much of a judgement abut what Rafa has done for a few weeks, as he will need a bit of time in training before his coaching really has an impact.
  • Defensively speaking, Rafa seemed to make a bit of a switch at halftime. Oscar was supporting Cesar Azpilicueta at the beginning of the second half, while Juan Mata moved more centrally and ahead of the two bands of four.
  • I have a feeling we'll see an awful lot more of Victor Moses going forward. He's just such an upgrade defensively to Eden Hazard or Juan Mata that he seems a perfect fit with Rafa's previous history.
  • This will be an interesting post-match interview. I don't think there was any question of what fans thought about this change after they had the opportunity to voice their opinion today. I've got no issues with it, and hopefully this two-hour vent session will allow us all to focus on the game again the next time we host one (which happens to be Wednesday against Fulham).
  • It's almost humorous watching our front three and fullback trying to manipulate a defense without even looking at the statue that is Fernando Torres. He looked plenty willing to run on the counter today, but he's just standing still when we have the ball in the attacking third.
  • Manchester City played four different strikers today that would be clear upgrades to anyone on our roster. Amazing.
  • Didier Drogba is a Yankee fan? Boo!
