The FA launches their investigation of Mark Clattenburg

The FA has launched their investigation into the report that referee Mark Clattenburg made inappropriate remarks to Juan Mata and John Obi Mikel during Chelsea's game with Manchester United.

The FA has begun their investigation into the incidents involving referee Mark Clattenburg during Sunday's Chelsea vs. Manchester United game. While this is obviously still in the earliest stages of the story, it's good to see the quick reaction to the complaint filed yesterday. The FA statement in full is as follows:

"The FA has begun an investigation relating to allegations made following Sunday's fixture at Stamford Bridge between Chelsea and Manchester United (Sunday 28 October 2012). The FA will make no further comment at this time."

As I mentioned several times yesterday, let's make it a point to be open minded in this situation until the facts come out. Yes, Clattenburg did an absolutely awful job refereeing that game. That doesn't excuse jumping to conclusions about allegations of this nature. Like with John Terry and Luis Saurez, I'd hope most of you reserve judgement until we know more.

This investigation and any potential charges that come from it are not likely to be resolved any time in the near future, so don't be expecting any sort of immediate ruling. I'd also expect that absolutely nothing involving yesterday's result will change as a result of the matter, at this point that damage is already done. I'd be surprised if we see Clattenburg being assigned to Chelsea games in the future, but outside of that, this should have little impact on the club on the pitch.

Like most of you, I was pleased when the entire John Terry episode finally got put to rest, as it meant we could get back to enjoying the game on the pitch. So much for that, as this will likely linger for a while.
