Its no secret that Chelsea has an aging attack. Players like Florent Malouda, (who, in all fairness, had a pretty good year last year) Nicolas Anelka, and Didier Drogba are starting to be considered dead wood and expendable. It generally considered that Chelsea are set at the centre forward position with Fernando Torres, Drogba, and a very talented Daniel Sturridge.
However, this leaves Chelsea lacking youth on the wings. There are several internal options like Daniel Sturridge who looked pretty solid at RW in the 4-0 romp over Kitchee. Gael Kakuta has looked very talented at the youth levels but perhaps showed that he's quite not ready for regular first team during his loan at Fulham. Nevertheless he should not be forgotten about.
So that leaves us with a young up-and-coming winger and possible winger that would really fit better at center forward. Overall, not the best situation. Of course you have another interesting option that Solomon Kalou. Kalou is still relatively young but has not shown the ability to be an everyday starter on Chelsea, however he seems to fancy himself as one. I have never liked Kalou that much as a starter and more envision him as a super-sub. He put in a good performance against Kitchee but again showed a lack of finishing in the attacking third (although his header was just unlucky).
This brings us to the future, there was an interesting quote doing the rounds today from Adam Johnson in which he essentially says that he wouldn't mind a move to the bridge. Several papers took it a step further to say that he would talk to Mancini about leaving. Originally when saw the quote I had wondered why Johnson would want to leave but after thinking this through Johnson is getting boxed out at Manchester City. This is somewhat baffling considered that he clearly has a ton of talent and is worthy of a starting position, but the recent acquisition of Aguero adds to an impressive attacking line that includes Dzeko, Balotelli, Tevez, Shaun Wright-Phillips, and more. It looks as though Johnson might think he is the odd man out.
I certainly would welcome Johnson to the bridge with open arms. His 1-on-1 ability is outstanding and can really change a game. I could see him slipping in to the right flank and combining with Torres and the midfield. The idea is pretty tantalizing even if the rumor is young.
If we don't get Johnson we still have good options on that side, the same cannot be said however for the left side. Florent Malouda has been the main option but he is getting long in tooth. Another option would be Yury Zhirkov but he is not exactly terrorizing defenses at the moment.
For me the clear option here is Eden Hazard. I have rated Hazard highly for a long time now and think he could really do us a world of good. I don't think we will bring him in this summer but I wouldn't bet against a January move especially considered that, despite getting Dimitri Payet, I don't Lille will be in the race for the Ligue 1 title next summer.
As I check the word count I realize I might have rambled on a bit but nonetheless I do think this is an important team need to address for Chelsea. What do you guys think?
